The Art & Science
Henna comes from the Lawsonia inermis tree — a flowering plant found in South Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa. The leaves are dried and ground into a fine powder, then mixed with lemon juice, essential oils, and sugar to create the paste used for body art. No chemicals, no synthetics — purely from nature.
Henna typically lasts 1 to 3 weeks depending on placement, skin type, and aftercare. Designs on palms and fingers — where skin is thicker — tend to stain the darkest and last the longest. Areas like the wrist or arm fade a little sooner. The stain starts orange and deepens to a rich brown within 24–48 hours.
Once the paste is applied, leave it on for at least 15 minutes to 2 hours — the longer the better. Overnight is ideal. Keep it warm and moist by sealing with lemon-sugar mixture. When removing, scrape gently — never wash off with water. After removal, avoid water on the design for another few hours. Moisturize daily with coconut or olive oil to keep the stain rich and slow fading.
Henna fades naturally on its own as your skin exfoliates over 1–3 weeks — no special removal needed. To speed it up, you can exfoliate gently with a scrub, use chlorinated water like a pool, or apply olive oil and rub in circles. It will not scrub off instantly — it fades gradually, which is completely normal and part of the henna experience.
